The History of the Society
Garrick badge
The Society was formed in 1942 with the object of 'fostering Dramatic Art by the performance of plays'. Rehearsals were first held in the 'New Schools' now known as St Ann's Church of Engl and School and there was a membership of thirty four.

The third production required music, included in which was Percy Grainger's 'Country Gardens'. This then became the Society's theme tune, and was played at all productions. In case you were unaware of it, this is the tune you hear directly before all our productions to this day. It is amazing what an effect a tune can have on a number of people, as all our members are turned to jel ly as soon as they hear it!

Our logo, which can be seen above the stage, was designed in 1943 by a member in response to a competition. It depicts the great actor David Garrick walking up a hill in the r ain!

In the mid 1960s the Society took an active part in the building of the Village Hall, investing a lot of time, money, and effort for the good of the community in Rainhill.

We are very proud of the legacy those early members have left us, and hope that they approve of the way in which we are trying to carry on in their footsteps.

The Society now has a membership of almost fifty with a core-acting group of about twenty, Keith Macklin was our president until his death in 2009, and our productions occur in February, May, and October with a pantomime alternate years in January. Our members take a hand in all aspects of production, and as well as seeing them in the footlights, you are quite likely to have them serving tea to you, taking your ticket, or selling you a programme. We make all our sets; provide prompts, props, lighting, and sound. We try to provide a varied programme of playes throughout the year and every effort is made to put on as professional a performance as we can.
